Unfortunately, just as I’m about to take her to our final destination for the day where I have my big surprise planned, she begs me to pull over. Yep. She gets sick once again.

When I feel her head, it’s clammy and I can’t help but notice she has lost all color. Maybe we overdid it and I’m overreacting but throwing up for three days straight and not keeping anything down in all that time has me extremely worried. She just lies limp in the car as we head back home, which scares the shit out of me even more. When she moans and rubs her upper stomach, I nearly lose it.

Screw this. I’m not taking any chances. Instead of taking her back to my place, I make a rash decision. I drive straight to the on-base hospital. I know she’s a civilian, but it’s the closest hospital around. When Samantha figures out my plans, she throws a fit. “Enzo, I don’t need to go to the hospital. I’ve just got the flu. There’s no need to go to this much trouble.”

But suddenly, she turns completely green and points to the shoulder of the road. I barely have a chance to get off safely before she’s opening the door and releasing the remaining contents of her stomach.

I give her a pointed look and ask, “Will you just humor me? Let’s go make sure that’s all this is. I can’t idly sit back and watch you suffer like this, not knowing the cause.”

“Okay,” she reluctantly agrees and falls asleep within moments.

Fuck! Her lethargic state is scaring the shit out of me. I step on the gas and get her there as safely as possible.

When we enter the waiting room, I explain her situation. Samantha is offered a wheelchair because she can hardly stand on her own. Thank the fucking Lord, there isn’t a long wait. Most people are home celebrating St. Nicholas Day and we’ve beaten the evening rush, according to one of the nurses.

The entire time, I can’t help but hold Samantha’s hand or have some part of me touching her. I feel so fucking helpless. She moans a little more and I nearly take out my frustrations on a nurse that finally comes to get us.

The nurse asks if I’m family and I say, “I’m her fiancé,” before any questions can be asked. There’s no fucking way I’m going to sit out in a waiting room because I’m not family. Besides, if I had had the chance to ask her, I would be telling the truth right now anyway.

The nurse records her vitals and asks her a series of questions. What feels like eons later, a doctor comes in and does a quick exam. Samantha’s sore throughout her stomach, so the doctor orders a series of tests to be done. Blood is drawn, and a nurse asks Samantha if she can give urine. She smiles weakly and the nurse assists her to the bathroom. It takes everything in my power not to insist I be the one to go with her, but Samantha gives me a knowing look, putting me at ease.
